Blind corals eat plastic thinking it is prey, may choke: Scientists

Corals may have developed a preference for consuming plastic bits, putting them at risk of being choked by the indigestible materials, a study has found.

Scientists have long known that marine animals mistakenly eat plastic debris because the tiny bits of floating plastic might look like prey.

The study of plastic ingestion by corals by researchers from Duke University in the US suggests there may be an additional reason for the potentially harmful behaviour.

Visual cues, such as a resemblance to prey, do not factor into the appeal because corals have no eyes, researchers said.

"Corals in our experiments ate all types of plastics but preferred unfouled microplastics by a threefold difference over microplastics covered in bacteria," said Austin S Allen, a PhD student at Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment.

"This suggests the plastic itself contains something that makes it tasty," said Allen.

"When plastic comes from the factory, it has hundreds of chemical additives on it. Any one of these chemicals or a combination of them could be acting as a stimulant that makes plastic appealing to corals," said Alexander C Seymour, from Duke's Marine Robotics and Remote Sensing Center.

Further research will be needed to identify the specific additives that make the plastic so tasty to corals and determine if the same chemicals act as feeding stimulants to other marine species, researchers said.

Microplastics, tiny pieces of weathered plastic less than five millimetres in diameter, began accumulating in the oceans four decades ago and are now ubiquitous in the marine environment.

They pose a major threat to foraging sea animals, including many species of birds, turtles, fish, marine mammals and invertebrates.

Since plastic is largely indigestible, it can lead to intestinal blockages, create a false sense of fullness or reduce energy reserves in animals that consume it.

"About eight per cent of the plastic that coral polyps in our study ingested was still stuck in their guts after 24 hours," said Allen.

The biological effects of most of these compounds are still unknown, but some, such as phthalates, are confirmed environmental estrogens and androgens - hormones that affect sex determination.

Researchers conducted their two-part study using corals collected from waters off the North Carolina coast.
In their first experiment, they offered small amounts of eight different types of microplastics to the corals to see if the animals would eat the bite-sized bits versus other similarly-sized items offered to them, such as clean sand.

"We found that the corals ate all of the plastic types we offered and mostly ignored sand," Allen said.

Actor Shakib Khan sued for 'disclosing' auto-rickshaw driver's phone number in movie

The calls mostly came from movie star Shakib Khan's female fans after the actor gave the number in a film.

The phone calls 'nearly broke' his marriage and the auto-rickshaw driver from Habiganj has now sued the actor, demanding Tk 5 million in damages.
Ijajul also named Director Bulbul Biswas and Producer Ashfaque Ahmed of 'Rajneeti' for using his phone number in the film in a case started at Habiganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Shampa Jahan's court on Sunday.
Shakib and his wife Apu Biswas returned as a couple on the silver screen after a long time through this movie released on June 26.
In a scene of 26 minutes, the protagonist Shakib gave heroine Apu 'his phone number', which was actually of Ijajul from Jatrapasha village of Baniachang Upazila.
Ijajul said in the case he received 432 calls only between July 10 and July 15.
A house help from Khulna also came to his house, thinking it of Shakib Khan's.
Ijajul's wife got mad at his husband seeing him getting phone calls from women throughout the days and nights.
He alleged he was struggling to save his marriage after the phone calls started coming.
MA Mazid, the lawyer for Ijajul, said the court recorded the case and ordered the Detective Branch of police to investigate it.

India receives highest visitors from Bangladesh

India's issuance of visas to the people of Bangladesh has marked a sharp rise in recent months as the two neighbouring countries are considering people-to-people contacts as the biggest strength to bolster ties.
Bangladeshi people constitute the largest number of visitors to India and Indian High Commission in Dhaka issued 9.76 lakh visas in 2016 and India expect this to grow to about 14 lakh visas in 2017, a diplomat told UNB on Wednesday.
According to Press Information Bureau of India, the percentage share of Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in India during September 2017 among the top 15 source countries was highest from Bangladesh 29.65 percent, while 10.24 percent from the USA followed by UK (7.04 pc), Sri Lanka (3.98pc), Australia (3.50pc), Malaysia (3.32pc), Germany (2.57pc), Japan (2.50pc), China (2.46pc), Canada (2.40pc), Nepal (2.30pc), France (1.86pc), Singapore (1.77pc), South Korea (1.40pc) and Afghanistan (1.21pc).
The number of FTAs in September was 7.23 lakh as compared to FTAs of 6.08 lakh in September, 2016 and 5.43 lakh in September, 2015.

According to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, the High Commission's visa section issued 7.5 lakh visas in 2015, 9.33 lakh visas in 2016 and 10.2 lakh visas by September 2017.
"The steps we've taken to launch more direct train and bus services will greatly ease travel between our nations. We welcome youth, media and academic exchanges," said Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj during her Dhaka visit.
She said they are offering five-year multiple entry visas, and are working on a scheme for their medical treatment in India.
Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla recently said the strength and soul of bilateral relationship between Bangladesh and India is in the strong people-to-people contacts.
He said a liberalised visa policy and a number of measures to ease access to Indian visa for Bangladesh nationals have boosted the movement of Bangladesh nationals to India who now constitute the largest number of foreign tourists to India.
With the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, medical visas have further been liberalised to allow people from Bangladesh to visit India for diagnosis as well.unb.

Children and household chores

Parenthood is undoubtedly one of the toughest jobs on the planet. Parents these days insist on perfecting every little detail of their kids' lives in order to help them grow up to be successful and joyous. While helping them stand on their feet with the best education and resources available, the smallest things are often overlooked, which could hamper their long run success in the future.
One of the hardest tasks nowadays is getting children involved in household chores, or worse, voluntarily not letting them get involved. Every member of the family should be involved in chores that can balance work and play, and that includes children as well.
Start simple

Anyone can be handed chores at any time, but it should be simple for children to begin with. Even toddlers can be taught to put back their toys in a basket instead of asking the help to clean up after them. This teaches them responsibility from a very early age, and is likely to last long after. However, it is important to not expect too much, as they are children after all, and they will make tonnes of mistakes. Show them how to tidy up instead of performing the chore yourself. Otherwise, kids will be more likely to mess up every time, thinking someone will take over the job.
Age Appropriateness

Of course the chores you hand your children need to be age-appropriate. When dealing with toddlers, give them small jobs like putting away toys after playtime, throwing wrappers in bins and teaching them how to feed the pet. As these children grow up a bit more, let them handle tougher tasks. Children who are a bit older should be expected to do chores properly, and should be given tasks that require more effort. Start by asking them to make their own beds, which is the main trigger to starting an efficient day. Teach them the importance of a clean study table. These kids should be handed jobs that not only help to clean, but exercise their skills as well, like colour coordinating books on a shelf, organising drawers accordingly, or counting as they fold clothes. Ask them to clean up after meals and spills, turn off the lights when leaving a room, take out the garbage, and water the plants.
Set up a routine

Children can get both tired and bored performing the same chores every single day, even more if they are not doing it willingly. Setting up a weekly planner will help them get out of the zone. Set a different task for everyday of the week. For the very small ones, try keeping an off day at first which will encourage them to quickly be done with their tasks. The bonus with these charts is that they help develop mathematical and organisation skills within children while they try to read maps or charts from a very young age.
Give recognition

No child will ever feel happy doing chores without encouragement. They need to hear words like 'Good Job' even though no parent will be satisfied with their work at first either. The main point here is not to do the job perfectly, but to do it to learn, and a praise or tap on the back can encourage children more than one might think.
Provide incentives

Treats for the young ones and maybe an allowance for the older ones can help encourage them to work, and maybe even look forward to it. This will also teach children that earnings come from hard work.
The key is to understand what discourages them from participating in the first place. A lot of factors are taken into account here. Sometimes, they do not understand the task at hand and sometimes they fail miserably, but with a little knowledge and help, they can surely overcome those barriers. The key is to teach children that we should not depend on the house help for every little chore, and always clean up after ourselves, be it at home, school, or outside.
It is always the small tasks that help children grow and learn, and eventually gives them a purpose to fulfil. It might not have a direct link to their future career or job, but it certainly teaches them the importance of accomplishing tasks by themselves, instead of having it done for them. It teaches them resourcefulness and excites them for more, all together helping them improve every step of the way.

Chile to ban plastic bags in coastal regions

Chile's President Michelle Bachelet signed a bill Wednesday that seeks to ban plastic bags in more than 100 coastal areas in a bid to halt the accumulation of ocean plastic.

Bachelet said the move was aimed at "taking care of our marine ecosystems."

"Our fish are dying from plastics ingestion or strangulation, it's a task in which everyone must collaborate," she said in a speech in the surfing resort of Pichilemu, 120 miles (200 kilometers) southwest of the capital Santiago.

In addition to banning the use of plastic bags in 102 coastal villages and towns, the bill will also allow non-coastal areas to join in the project to restrict or eliminate their use.

The World Wildlife Fund said the move "marks a very important milestone for Chile and opens the door for the whole country to say goodbye to plastic bags."

"We hope that parliamentarians will transversally support this initiative which is good for the country," said Ricardo Bosshard, head of WWF Chile.

A 2015 study published in the American magazine Science estimated eight million tons of plastic are dumped into the sea annually.

Plastic packaging of all kinds poses a serious threat to the environment, affecting millions of marine species.

Toxic particles from degraded plastic in the ocean are ingested by fish and, through the food chain, by humans.

Bachelet's government plans to create 1.6 million square kilometers of marine conservation areas by 2018.

Root says absence of Stokes will give others a chance to shine

Stokes was arrested last month after an incident on a night out in Bristol following a one-day international, and released without charge, but remains under police investigation.

Key to England's hopes of avoiding a repeat of a humiliating 5-0 whitewash on their last trip to Australia four years ago, he will not travel with the rest of the squad when they fly out on Saturday but could join up later.
"We've just got to sit tight and wait," Root told reporters about when or whether that will happen.
"It's obviously disappointing that Ben's not going to be with us, but it's a very strong squad. It gives other guys opportunities to stand up, put their stamp on test cricket and do something special.
"He's a fine player but I see a squad more than capable of going over there and doing something really special.
"If you don't believe that you can come back winning there's no point getting on the plane."
England play a first warm-up match in Perth on Nov. 4 with the first test starting on Nov. 23 in Brisbane.
As well as regaining the Ashes at home in 2015, they won both series against South Africa and West Indies during their home season this year but failed to find a reliable number three or number five batsman.
Tom Westley was tried, then left out of the tour squad, while Gary Ballance and James Vince have been recalled.
Paceman Steve Finn was added following the police investigation into Stokes and there are three uncapped players in the party: fast bowler Craig Overton, leg-spinner Mason Crane and deputy wicketkeeper Ben Foakes.

"I look everyone in the eye and they're all very keen to get out there and detrmined to win and come home successful," Root added.

Moustachioed Mona Lisa sells for $750,000

One of Marcel Duchamp's reproductions of Leonardo Da Vinci's "Mona Lisa", on to which he pencilled a beard and moustache, has sold for 632,500 euros ($750,000) at Sotheby's in Paris.

It was part of the sale of a collection of surrealist works owned by American Arthur Brandt, with 110 pieces fetching 3.9 million euros, including commission.

However, some standout pieces, including a work by Francis Picabia, which was estimated at 700,000 euros, did not find a buyer.

Duchamp's version of the "Mona Lisa" was one of nine works in the sale by the French artist, who is seen as the father of conceptual art.

The "Mona Lisa" works are entitled "L.H.O.O.Q", which in French sounds like the phrase "elle a chaud au cul", roughly translated as "she's horny". It had a pre-sale estimate of 400,000 to 600,000 euros.

The version that sold late Saturday was created in 1964 after the original 1919 so-called "ready made" piece.

The other Duchamp pieces on offer at the auction included "Boite-en-valise" or "Box in a Suitcase", which beat its pre-sale estimate of 180,000 to 250,000 euros, selling for 319,500 euros.

The work is a portable museum featuring 68 of the artist's most famous works, reproduced or miniaturised.
Seven distinct versions were made in limited edition between 1941 and 1966.

A painting by Swiss artist Kurt Seligmann called "Buste d'homme", estimated at 60,000 to 80,000 euros, was sold for 181,250 euros, "not far from a world record for the artist", according to Sotheby's.

Among the six pieces offered from artist and photographer Man Ray, "The Lovers", a set of lips engraved in lead and then painted, accompanied by a rope, sold for 81,250 euros, far above the upper pre-sale estimate of 25,000 euros.

On the occasion of poet Shamsur Rahman's 88th birth anniversary, Bangladesh National Museum (BNM) held a commemorative programme at its premises in Sufia Kamal Auditorium, followed by the unveiling of a photography exhibition depicting the literary luminary's life in its main auditorium. The programme, titled “Jibon or Shahitya”, proceeded with a discussion at 3pm on October 23.
The event saw the attendance of noted poets including Mohammad Nurul Huda, Habibullah Shirazi, Nasir Ahmed and Mahbub Aziz. Minister of Information Hasanul Haq Inu was present as chief guest, while former Senior Secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamoon chaired the programme.
Director General of BNM Faizul Latif Chowdhury opened the programme with a welcome address, stating that BNM has taken initiatives since last year to posthumously celebrate the lives and works of noted individuals on their birth and death anniversaries.
Members on the dais reminisced about their encounters with the poet Shamsur Rahman, who was also a noted columnist, journalist, and editor of the daily Dainik Bangla. They also elaborated on the crucial influence Shamsur Rahman's works had in shaping Bangladesh's literary traditions, as well as the sharp foresight his poetry contained regarding the socio-political atmosphere in Bangladesh.
“When I traveled to Dhaka from the South, I was virtually unknown in those years, and the first poet I met in the capital was Shamsur Rahman. I did not know his name then; his name was so familiar sounding that he could have been anyone from my next of kin. He lived in Old Dhaka, and when I first saw him, I understood then that he was a poet of immense measure, and it was an essence that emanated from deep within him, without deliberate assertion,” said noted poet Nurul Huda.
Minister of Information Hasanul Haq Inu stated, “His work today stands as a crucial testament to our country's history and tradition, but most importantly he has set an example regarding his responsibility as a writer, which is to stand up for what is right and true through writing.”
The event concluded with a photography exhibition depicting various vignettes from the poet's life. Over 100 photos taken by MA Taher were on display, giving viewers intimate glimpses of the poet with his family, at work and during social appearances.
