Workers of three garment factories staged demonstration blocking a road in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area for over three hours today in protest against closure of the factories without any prior notice.
Hundreds of workers of Alif Textiles limited-1, Alif Textiles limited-2 and Hexa Garments of Alif Group took to street around 9:30am.
The workers found a notice of factory closure hanging on their factory gates when they came to their workplaces after Eid vacation, an eye witness said.
The notice said that three factories were closed for an indefinite period, said Lokman Hossain Bhuyian, an employee of Alif Garments Ltd.
They withdrew the blockade around 12:30pm on law enforcers’ assurance of taking measures in this regard, Lokman said.
Contacted, Siddiqur Rahman, president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, told The Daily Star that a meeting is scheduled to be held between BGMEA members and the owner of the Alif Group in the afternoon.
“We will discuss about the due payment of the employees in the meeting,” he said.
