Two new films of Mamo coming up next month

Busy with playing numerous roles for the small screen throughout the year, National Film Award winner Zakia Bari Mamo still managed to appear in three films this year.
After her amazing performance in Arun Chowdhury’s ‘Alta Banu’, the actress has been featured in two more films—‘Shopner Ghor’ and ‘Dohon’—to be released in November.

‘Shopner Ghor’, directed by Taneem Rahman Angshu, is set to release on November 9, while ‘Dohon’, directed by Raihan Rafi, is set to hit the cinemas on November 16.
In the films ‘Shopner Ghor’ and ‘Dohon’, the actress will be seen playing the role of Maria and Maya respectively.
About the release of her films in the same month, Mamo said, “The films have completely different plotlines. Their teasers have already been released.  I have seen the viewer’s eagerness for both the films. I am really hopeful about them.”
“The quality of Bangladeshi films is improving. I believe that both ‘Shopner Ghor’ and ‘Dohon’ will attract people to the theatres,” she also said.
“‘Shopner Ghor’ is a horror film. As far as I know, this is not a very common genre for our viewers. I think this is going to create a different vibe,” she added.
However, Mamo is currently shooting for three new tele-dramas directed by Anjan Aich in Cox’s Bazar.
From November 5, the actress will be participating in promotions of her films.

New v Old: Return of the cult classics

Who says new cars are boring? There's plenty of new cars that borrow from established classics, taking ideas and details off older machines with a cult following. The past month alone has seen a number of new releases, so we got to comparing.

The new McLaren Speedtail takes the Brit supercar manufacturer to new heights, with a rumoured top speed 'in excess of 250 MPH'. Only 106 units will be built at a price of £1.75million plus taxes, and is the most powerful and aerodynamically efficient McLaren to date. This 17 feet long hypercar has three abreast seating like the original F1 and the 1036 HP hybrid powertrain takes it from 0-190 MPH in 128 seconds (the P1 takes 16.5). It's all set to break some records.
New: McLaren
New: BMW 8-series
The all-new 8-series makes a comeback after two decades, the return tour defined by BMW's need to fill the gap of a big GT car. With Lexus and Mercedes Benz hot on the trail, BMW's product portfolio needed a luxurious GT car— the 8-series fills that void with a 530 HP 4.4 V8, numerous tech and luxury features borrowed from the flagship 7 and exterior styling to match. There's also an inline six motor.
New: Porsche Speedster II
The Porsche Speedster II was announced after the German sports car maker announced they'd make a limited run of the Speedster I concept, shown at Geneva last year. With only 1948 units commissioned, the Speedster II celebrates the issuance of the first license awarded to the production of the original Porsche Speedster. The II's red paint symbolises the 1988 Speedster's factory colour.
New: Suzuki Jimny
The new Suzuki Jimny is already in the market and making waves with reviewers, who are praising it for its smartly squared off looks and off-road ability. Bright colours, funky interior and loads of customising options makes the new Jimny a perfect match for the outdoor-obsessed millennial of today, as they sip their pumpkin-spiced lattes across muddy terrain.
OLD: McLaren F1 Longtail
The original McLaren F1 held the top speed record for production cars for almost a decade and became a household name for its sheer ability and engineering excellence. The Longtail was the competition spec—longer rear haunches and aero additions made the F1 more stable and improved cornering ability. As a factory racer, it enjoyed tremendous success in Le Mans and the like.

Old: BMW 850 CSI
The original 8-series became a cult classic thanks to its wedge design, luxury features and a V12 motor that you could have with a traditional manual gearbox. Oh, and pop-up headlights. The big GT even donated its V12 to the McLaren F1 (see above). However, the market wasn't ready and it was a sales flop.
Old: PorscheSpeedster
The original 1988 Speedster took a dramatic turn away from the wedge-y shapes that other manufacturers were obsessed with and got a curved windscreen and petite windows. The roof was tucked under a giant hump on the back, and the black running boards were made iconic by the wide hips of this most-loved 911 generation.
Old: Suzuki Jimny/Samurai
A favourite for anyone looking for a sturdy, capable workhorse on the cheap, the original Suzuki Jimnys are still puttering about with 1300cc motors and bare-bones interiors. Maruti made a bunch in their deal with Suzuki, and India's practically flooded with these things. They're used as cop cars, ambulances and who knows what else. There's quite a few in Bangladesh as well.

Ideal timing between pregnancies is at least one year: study

Women who want to bear children in their 30s and 40s often face a dilemma regarding how much time to wait between pregnancies. Doctors often advise they wait 18 to 24 months. But pregnancy risks mount with age.

A study Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), based on 150,000 pregnancies in Canada from 2004 to 2014, concludes that waiting less than a year between pregnancies raises the risks, regardless of a woman’s age.

After a year, however, there is little difference in risk.

“The take-home message from the study is that closely spaced pregnancies have risks for women of all ages,” said study author Laura Schummers, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of British Columbia.

“We found that maternal risks were present for women 35 and older only, and not for younger women, whereas risks to the baby were present for women both aged 20 to 34 and women 35 and older.

Risks were similar between 12 and 24 months, and “we saw a very small further reduction between 12 and 18 months,” Schummers told AFP.

The interpregnancy interval was calculated as the amount of time between the birth of one child and the conception of the next one.

For women over 35, the risk of maternal complications was highest for pregnancies that began three, six or nine months following a prior birth.

For infants, risks rose among closely timed pregnancies regardless of the mother’s age.

These included stillbirth, infant death in the first year of life, low birth weight and prematurity, and affected about two percent of infants in the study.

When pregnancy began six months after a birth, the risk of premature birth rose 59 percent compared to pregnancies timed to begin 18 months after a birth.

Doctors in the United States typically urge women to wait at least 18 months between childbirth and pregnancy.

The World Health Organization recommends at least 24 months.

“Our findings indicate a shorter optimal interval than previously thought (12-24 months) for women of all ages,” concluded the study.

“This finding may be reassuring, particularly for older women who must weigh the competing risks of increasing maternal age with longer interpregnancy intervals (including infertility and chromosomal anomalies) against the risks of short interpregnancy intervals.”

How safe is your airline?

Governing bodies in the United States and the European Union publish their evaluations of airlines, often by country, and provide resources for flyers when determining if their carrier is on a safety blacklist.
Here’s where to find those resources before you book.
DOES THE CARRIER MEET US SAFETY STANDARDS?
The Federal Aviation Administration runs the International Aviation Safety Assessment Program, or IASA, which ensures that the country where a foreign carrier is based complies with safety standards established by the UN's International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). IASA evaluates countries based on eight criteria, including their aviation laws, operating regulations, civil aviation system and safety oversight functions, personnel qualification and training, and how safety concerns are resolved.
The results, which are updated regularly, are published by country based on a rating of 1, or “meets ICAO standards,” or 2, does not meet those standards. Those countries failing the standards are Bangladesh, Curacao, Ghana, Sint Maarten and Thailand. To check the status of a country, go to www.faa.gov/about/initiatives/iasa/media/IASAWS.xlsx, which lists the ratings by country. The FAA does not rate airlines individually.
Carriers from category 2 countries that operate in the United States or code-share with American carriers — which means the airlines match up their schedules, apply their own flight numbers and sell each other’s flights — are limited to operations that existed at the time of the evaluation, but cannot expand operations in US airspace. Thai Airways is a member of the Star Alliance, a code-share group that includes United Airlines, but does not fly in the United States.
Those with category 2 rankings that seek to start service in the United States or establish code shares with American carriers are banned from doing so.
WHAT ABOUT EUROPEAN RULES?
The European Union’s Air Safety List approves or bans airlines from flying in EU airspace. As at the FAA, criteria for the list follow safety standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization, including personnel licensing procedures, aircraft operations, air navigation services, accident investigations and the aviation laws of a country.
Lion Air was cleared from the European Union’s blacklist in 2016, and all other Indonesian carriers previously on the list were cleared in June after it was determined that safety standards countrywide had been improved.
Worried flyers can check the 2018 update of the list at ec.europa.eu/transport/modes/air/safety/air-ban_en, which includes airlines that are banned from EU skies; among them are 114 airlines from 15 countries, including Afghanistan, Eritrea and Nepal. According to the website, airlines on the list show “lack of safety oversight by the aviation authorities from these states.”
Another six individual airlines are banned based on safety concerns with those specific carriers, as opposed to the standards established by their home countries. They include Iran Aseman Airlines; Iraqi Airways in Iraq; Blue Wing Airlines in Suriname; Med-View Airlines in Nigeria; Avior Airlines in Venezuela; and Air Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe.
While the cause of the Lion Air accident remains under investigation, statistics show that flying generally is a safe way to travel. The airline trade association International Air Transport Association, which represents 290 member airlines, or 82 percent of all air traffic, reported an accident rate of 1.08 per 1 million flights in 2017.
“Worldwide, air travel is incredibly safe,” said Gary Leff, who writes the aviation blog View from the Wing. “The things that go wrong are such outliers,” he said, because things generally do not go wrong.
DOES ANYONE PUT ALL THE INFORMATION TOGETHER?
The commercial website Airlineratings.com publishes safety ratings for more than 435 carriers worldwide. The site uses a seven-star system for rating airlines based on whether they have passed an operational safety audit with the International Air Transport Association; if they are allowed to fly in the European Union; if they are free of fatalities in the last 10 years, and whether they have passed the ICAO country audit.
After the crash, Lion Air currently holds a six-star rating from the group. Air France has the same level of clearance; the website notes a 2009 fatality. All three legacy carriers based in the United States — American, Delta and United — have seven-star ratings.

Afsana Mimi's hopes for Ichchhetola

Afsana Mimi's career took off when she appeared in the show 'Kothao Keu Nei' on BTV during the nineties. Since then, Mimi has been a popular face in both television and theatre. Her last play was Prachyanat's 'Raja Ebong Onnanno' in 2011. She has also directed a number of tele-fictions. The artiste talks about her passion project, Ichchhetola, her current engagements and more.
What are you busy with at the moment?
I am the director of Ichchhetola, a cultural centre in Uttara. On Fridays and Saturdays, we hold classes for students from different backgrounds, including children of the underprivileged community. I spend most of my time at Ichchhetola these days.
How would you describe the vision of Ichchhetola?
At Ichchhetola, we have music, dance, painting, acting and physical education courses for our students. We hope to provide children a culturally enriched learning environment.
Tell us about some of your latest and upcoming television projects.
I will be directing a TV series for NTV, which is an adaptation of a well-known novel. We will start working on the series next year. Other than that, I recently did Bhuter Baksho for Duronto TV.
Since you are now mostly working behind the camera, do you miss acting?
I want to work with good actors and directors. Unfortunately, it is quite rare to come across good scripts for television these days. Even though I miss acting at times, I want to be a part of riveting stories and not take on roles just for the sake of it.
With all the different projects that you are a part of, it seems like you are quite a busy person. What keeps you going with such determination?
Everything that I do – be it acting, directing or running the cultural centre, brings me immense happiness. I always keep in mind that if we can find passion in our work, then we are not only lucky but we will also turn out to be successful.

New study links tooth loss to malnutrition

According to a new study, older adults with tooth loss are at higher risk of both impaired oral health and malnutrition.

The study, which appeared in the Journal of Aging Research and Clinical Practice, analysed the health records of 107 community-dwelling senior citizens treated at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine clinic between 2015 and 2016.

The results showed that more than 25 per cent of the patients had malnutrition or were at risk for malnutrition.

"The mouth is the entryway for food and fluid intake. If its integrity is impaired, the functional ability of an individual to consume an adequate diet may be adversely impacted," said lead author Rena Zelig, director of the Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition Program at Rutgers School of Health Professions.

According to Zelig, the findings showed that dental clinics are ideal locations to perform nutritional status screenings as they can identify patients who may not regularly visit a primary care provider and who may be at risk for malnutrition.

"Clinicians also can provide patients with referrals to Registered Dietitians and community assistance programs such as Meals on Wheels to prevent further decline in nutritional status," she added.

This was the first part of a mixed-methods grant to research the associations between tooth loss and nutritional status in older adults. The second part of the grant built on these results and qualitatively studied the eating experience and eating-related quality of life of community-dwelling older adults using qualitative interviews.

The study set the stage for further research to examine the relationships between tooth loss and malnutrition risk and the impact of tooth loss on the eating experience and eating-related quality of life.

Arjun Kapoor, Malaika Arora not getting married anytime soon

Arjun Kapoor and Malaika Arora’s friendship has been on solid ground for a long time. However, both of them didn’t speak too much about it. But after they made an appearance at the Lakme Fashion Week two months ago, it seemed like this twosome was sending out a message saying they were ready to acknowledge each other in public.

Their growing fondness for each other has become the talk of the town lately, what with the Namaste England actor flying to Italy to ring in Malla’s (as the model and actress is popularly known) 45th birthday.
Two days later, there was further speculation of him joining her group of friends in Mumbai for an extended b’day bash in the bay. No wonder, the cool pair’s mutual admiration has set tongues wagging. A superstar wife even went to the extent of telling us that there is a wedding coming up soon.
However, After Hrs caught up with a close friend of this hip duo who gave us the complete lowdown on their relationship status. And yes, folks, you are reading it first here that marriage is not yet on the cards for this charming couple.
“Arjun and Malaika have started spending quality time together. They are extremely fond of each other and are exploring their beautiful relationship. Let’s not jump the gun here. We should just let them be. Marriage is definitely not on the cards anytime soon for them,” informs the source.
“Arjun is a doting brother and will only settle down once his sister Anshula agrees to do so. Malaika is also just beginning to get to know Arjun well.
They have just started their courtship and both are clear that they want to enjoy each other’s company right now. Arjun is neck-deep in his film commitments and Malaika, too, has a hectic work life. There is a lot of time before the relationship hits the next gear,” the source says.DNA India.

Pique reacts to crowd insulting Ramos

The rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona has always been an intense one. When El Clasico comes around, things reach boiling points even as the rivalry had damped a little in the last few years. The political context of Catalonia cannot be avoided either in these matches as banners before the game showed. The footballing rivalry does not take a back seat with intense matches played between the two giants of Spanish football. A pig’s head was thrown at Luis Figo once for leaving Barcelona and joining Real Madrid.
For all the rivalry, the players do have respect for each other and that was on view in yesterday’s match at the Camp Nou. The crowd was especially bitter about Sergio Ramos and his tough tackling and hurled abuse at the Real Madrid defender during the game. Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, who has played alongside the Real Madrid captain for Spain national side reacted to the crowd’s gesture, telling them to stop.
Pique and Ramos share a friendship and a rivalry. The two have competed to play for the national team and also played alongside each other. There have been banters, and there have been words exchanged in anger. In the heat of a Clasico match however, Pique remembered that football is about respect.

High carbohydrate diet may induce obesity in some: Study

Researchers have identified a DNA mutation common in animals that may explain why a diet high in carbohydrates induces obesity and diabetes in some but not others.

The study, published in the journal PLOS Genetics, showed a surprising difference between two sets of the fruit flies when feeding with alternate diets high in protein and high in carbohydrates.

Fruit fly larvae with a noted mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutation showed a pronounced increase in development when eating high carbohydrate diet of banana, but stagnated on a high protein diet of passion fruit, Xinhua news agency quoted the study as saying.

Conversely, fruit fly larvae without that mutation thrived on the high protein diet, but dropped in frequency when put on carbohydrates, the report said.

The six-year collaborative study by Australian, American and Spanish researchers challenged the neutral theory of molecular evolution in which changes in species at the molecular level are random, not caused by natural selection and provide no benefit or disadvantage to the species.

According to lead author Bill Ballard from the University of New South Wales, the research was a rare demonstration of positive selection at work in evolution.

Given that humans share 75 per cent of the same genes as fruit flies, and have the same mtDNA genes, it is likely, according to the study, that the same mutation inherited in human mtDNA may metabolise carbohydrates in a similar way.

"But, the news is not all bad for people harbouring the mutation," said Ballard.

"You would need to manage your carbohydrate intake when you are younger, but if you are unfortunate enough to develop Parkinson's Disease, a high carbohydrate diet will help you maintain weight," Ballard added.
