Two teams comprising 30 doctors from different departments took part in the surgery that started around 8am.
The 10-month-old twins were in stable condition, paediatric surgeon Kaniz Hasina told reporters at 2:30pm, after emerging from the operating theatre.
"We still need another two to three hours to complete some repairs.”

The baby girls were joined along their spinal columns and shared the same rectum, which was separated at DMCH after the twins were admitted there on the eighth day of their birth.
Their condition is called pygopagus, where two individuals are joined at the buttocks, most often back to back, said Shahnoor Islam, associate professor at the Paediatric Surgery Department of DMCH.
The surgery involved risks but doctors were hopeful, DMCH Director Mizanur Rahman had earlier said. "Tofa is stronger and more active than Tohura. We are hoping they will recover after the surgery.”
Around midday, the hospital’s paediatric surgery chief Ashraful Haque said the twins’ spinal cord and the spine have been separated. "Whatever has been done until now is successful. The children are fine."
