Shooting at YouTube offices in California wounds at least 3, female suspect dead

A woman opened fire at YouTube's headquarters near San Francisco on Tuesday, sending employees scrambling into the street and at least three victims to local hospitals before taking her own life, police said.

Police did not release any further information on the suspect or speculate on her motives for the shooting at the offices of YouTube, which is owned by Alphabet Inc's Google.

"We did locate a victim with what we believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It’s a female,” San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini said at a news conference, describing the person police believe was the shooter.

One of the victims, a 36-year-old man, was listed in critical condition at San Francisco General Hospital.

A 32-year-old woman was listed in serious condition and a 27-year-old woman in fair condition.

Authorities did not release names of any of the victims.

A YouTube product manager, Todd Sherman, described on Twitter hearing people running, first thinking it was an earthquake before he was told that a person had a gun.

"At that point every new person I saw was a potential shooter. Someone else said that the person shot out the back doors and then shot themselves," Sherman said on Twitter.

"I looked down and saw blood drips on the floor and stairs. Peaked around for threats and then we headed downstairs and out the front," Sherman said.

Google told NBC news in a statement that it was coordinating with local authorities.

"Customers said they heard what could have been gunshots when they were on their way here," Natalie Mangiante, an employee at Big Mouth Burgers located near the YouTube building, said by phone. Mangiante said she did not see or notice anything.

Local television images showed YouTube employees walking out of the building with their hands raised.

Last month, YouTube announced it would ban content promoting the sale of guns and gun accessories as well as videos that teach how to make guns.

Method
* To prepare the muffin batter, sift the flour, cocoa powder, salt, baking powder and baking soda into a bowl. Chop the chocolate and add to the flour mixture. Set aside.
* In a separate bowl, beat the oil and the sugar. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Add the vanilla and the coffee powder. Beat until smooth. Finally, add the milk and vinegar. Stir in the flour mixture until fully incorporated.
* Spoon the batter into greased muffin tins. Place one or two frozen cranberries into the centre of each of the muffins. Bake in a 350°F/176°C oven for 18 to 25 minutes, or until a cake tester inserted into the centre comes out clean.

Hollywood honors Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman in 1970s

Actress Lynda Carter, who played superhero Wonder Woman in the 1970s, was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday, reports AFP.

"It will be here forever, and maybe it needs to say Wonder Woman, or maybe not, we'll see. Hopefully this character and I will live on in the memories of people," 66-year-old Carter said.

"There was no women in television during my era. So they didn't really think that we could hold an audience," she said.

She addressed the #MeToo movement sparked by the Harvey Weinstein sex abuse scandal, which ended his career and those of numerous other powerful Hollywood figures.

The "#MeToo movement is strong and I give everything to this generation," she said. "What my generation can do is support you."

"We've been screaming the same thing but it took this generation of women to make the difference."

Carter played the heroine between 1975 and 1979 on television, first on ABC and then CBS -- part of an acting career that has spanned several decades.

The ceremony was attended by Patty Jenkins, the director of the 2017 "Wonder Woman" film which took in $821 million worldwide, as well as dozens of Carter's fans.

High BP before pregnancy may raise miscarriage risk

High blood pressure before conception and early in pregnancy may increase the risk of pregnancy loss, even if the woman does not have a hypertension diagnosis, new research has found.

“Elevated blood pressure among young adults is associated with a higher risk of heart disease later in life, and this study suggests it may also have an effect on reproductive health,” said lead author of the study Carrie Nobles from Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute for Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) in Maryland, US.

Millimeter of mercury, or mm Hg, is the unit of measure used for blood pressure.

The findings, published in the journal Hypertension, showed that for every 10 mm Hg increase in diastolic blood pressure (pressure when the heart is resting between beats), there was 18 per cent higher risk for pregnancy loss among the study population.

The researchers also found a 17 per cent increase in pregnancy loss for every 10 mm Hg increase in mean arterial pressure, a measure of the average pressure in the arteries during full heart beat cycles.

The researcher studied more than 1,200 women who had already experienced one or two pregnancy losses and were trying to become pregnant.

The findings were similar for preconception and early-pregnancy blood pressure.

“The impact of cardiovascular risk factors starts really early in life. Physicians treating women of reproductive age should pay attention to slightly elevated blood pressure because it may have other not-well-recognised effects, such as adverse pregnancy outcome,” said senior author of the study Enrique Schisterman from NICHD.

“Preconception is a previously unrecognized critical window for intervention such as lifestyle changes that can help prevent later heart disease and may also improve reproductive health,” Schisterman said.

Ronaldo's outrageous bicycle kick caps emphatic Real win over Juventus

Cristiano Ronaldo scored with a bicycle kick which was outrageous even by his standards to lead Real Madrid to an emphatic 3-0 win away to Juventus in their Champions League quarter-final, first leg on Tuesday.

With his back to goal, Ronaldo launched himself into the air to meet Dani Carvajal's chipped ball and produced a perfectly-executed bicycle shot which flew past keeper Gianluigi Buffon and put Real 2-0 ahead.

The goal was greeted by applause even from Juventus fans who only minutes earlier had hounded and insulted Ronaldo when he shot wide.

The Portuguese had got Real off the mark with a third-minute goal, scoring for a record 10th successive Champions League game, and Marcelo was also on target as Juve's five-year unbeaten home record in European competition crumbled.

A red card for playmaker Paulo Dybala in the 66th minute completed a miserable evening for the Serie A champions, beaten 4-1 by Real in last season's Champions League final.

“When you play against sides like this, you need a little bit of luck and, more than anything else, to meet Ronaldo on a bad night," said Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.

"I am disappointed with the third goal because we should have tried to keep it down to 2-0 and then try to achieve something remarkable in Madrid."

Point-blank save

Juventus had not lost at home in Europe since Bayern Munich's 2-0 win in April 2013, a 27-match run, but that record was quickly under threat as their usually impregnable defence was split open with nonchalant ease after only three minutes.

Marcelo passed the ball between two defenders to set Isco free on the left and his low cross to the near post was flicked into the net by Ronaldo for his eighth goal in six meetings against Juventus.

Juventus responded well to the setback, launching a series of dangerous attacks, and Real goalkeeper Keylor Navas prevented what seemed a certain goal with a superb point-blank save from Gonzalo Higuain's volley.

Defender Giorgio Chiellini also missed a good chance when he misdirected a header from a corner but Real were always menacing and Toni Kroos thumped a rising shot against the bar from 25 metres.

Juve also began the second half in lively mood but lost their way in a dramatic eight minutes.

An uncharacteristic mix-up between Buffon and veteran defender Chiellini started a Real attack which ended with Ronaldo's astonishing goal, his 14th in the Champions League this season, in the 64th minute.

Two minutes later, Dybala, booked in the first half for a dive in the penalty area, was given a second yellow card for a clumsy challenge on Carvajal.

Marcelo applied the coup de grace in the 72nd minute as he switched passes with Isco and then Ronaldo before rounding Buffon to score into an empty net.

Ronaldo nearly grabbed a hat-trick and although Juve escaped further damage they face an almost impossible task in next week's return.
