Reaching a global audience with the music of the roots

Among the many musicians that enthralled the audience of Dhaka International Folk Fest 2018, Labik Kamal Gaurob stood out with his sheer talent and majestic voice. He made his presence felt as a guest artiste, performing with Shayan Chowdhury Arnob.
His remarkable performance in Dhaka International Folk Fest 2018 helped him receive new opportunities to showcase Bangladeshi music on international platforms. Gaurob is already a well-known name in the industry, having performed in international music festivals around the world including World of Music, Arts and Dance Festival (WOMAD), which is one of the largest international music festivals, Songlines Encounter Festival, BBC Festivals and many more.
The musician's work is influenced by the philosophy of Fakir Lalon Shai. To him, there is unfathomable depth in the philosophy of the works of Bauls and Fakirs of our country, which is why back in the late 90s, he went to Kushtia, the unofficial home of Baul music. “My enthusiasm about the philosophy of Fakir Lalon Shai led me to the roots for a better understanding,” says Gaurob. “For ten years, I have roamed around different places of Bangladesh, and had the opportunity to attend Sadhusangas to learn about not just the music, but the philosophy of around 150 years. One needs to be in the company of the Bauls and Fakirs to comprehend their lifestyle.”
The singer, songwriter and founder of the fusion band Ajob aspires to spread the music of our roots worldwide. “We hope to be musically strong enough to represent ourselves and secure a strong position in the world music scene,” adds Gaurob. “A lot of African and Cuban bands have taken themselves to a position where people from all over the country buy their music and listen to them, even if they do not understand the language. I hope that we, as Bangladeshis, can do the same.”
Gaurob added that Dhaka International Folk Fest is a great platform, where Bangladeshi musicians showcase themselves alongside the best minds in the folk music industry. The artiste mentioned that he is thankful to Dhaka International Folk Fest 2018. “I was invited to perform in Ranthambore Folk Festival, and Dhaka International Folk Fest 2018 was one of the reference points for them to invite me,” he says. “We came out as one the best acts in a festival among 30 bands. It was a great achievement for us to play in Rajasthan and get a great response as well.”
2019 is expected to be an eventful one for Labik Kamal Gaurob and his band, as they gear up to release many upcoming hits.

New weight loss procedure shrinks fat: Study

Turns out, a novel interventional procedure known as left gastric artery embolisation, which is generally used to treat obesity, leads to the loss of both fat and muscle.

According to a new study, the loss of muscle mass is concerning and underscores the importance of proper nutritional counseling.

Obesity is one of the major health issues worldwide, linked with serious conditions like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. First-line treatments such as diet and exercise often don’t work.

Currently under investigation in clinical trials, left gastric artery embolisation is a less invasive option to surgery. In the procedure, microscopic beads are injected under imaging guidance into the artery that supplies blood to the stomach.

The beads block blood flow to the stomach and reduce the production of ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates hunger. Early studies have shown that embolisation is effective in helping people lose weight, but information is lacking on how it might change a patient’s composition of muscle and fat.

“There has been lots of research focused on the efficacy of gastric artery embolisation for weight loss,” said the study’s lead author, Edwin A. Takahashi. “However, there has been no data on what is contributing to the weight loss, whether the patients are losing fat, as desired, or muscle mass, or some combination of the two.”

The researchers studied CT scans of 16 obese patients who had undergone left gastric artery embolisation to treat gastrointestinal bleeding. CT scans, when used in conjunction with special software, allowed for measurements of body composition based on the different densities of tissues like fat and muscle.

The scans were done before and approximately 1.5 months after the procedure. The results were compared to those of a control group of 16 outpatients who did not undergo left gastric artery embolisation but had CT scans at two different time periods for nonspecific abdominal pain.

After the embolisation procedure, all 16 individuals experienced significant weight loss, losing an average of 6.4 percent of their body weight over 1.5 months.

While the weight loss was not surprising to the researchers, the changes in body composition were. The skeletal muscle index, a measure of the amount of muscle that connects to the skeleton and helps move the limbs, fell by 6.8 percent. Skeletal muscle is important to health, and loss of it can impair physical function and metabolism and put a person at higher risk of injury.

“The significant decrease in the amount of skeletal muscle highlights the fact that patients who undergo this procedure are at risk for losing muscle mass and need to be managed accordingly after the procedure,” said Takahashi. “We must make sure they receive adequate nutrition to minimize the amount of muscle tissue they lose.”

The patients also lost a significant amount of body fat. The overall body fat index dropped by an average of 3.7 percent. However, much of the fat loss was subcutaneous, or the fat that lies directly under the skin.

Visceral fat, the more dangerous fat surrounding the organs and associated with serious health problems like heart disease and diabetes, did not decrease significantly over the course of follow-up.

Study finds link between lung disease and dementia

According to a recent study, lung disease in middle age could be a risk factor for dementia or cognitive impairment later in life.

The findings have been published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Lead author Pamela L Lutsey of the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health, and a group of researchers report that both restrictive and obstructive lung diseases were associated with dementia, including Alzheimer's disease and with mild cognitive impairment. The link was stronger for restrictive lung diseases, such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and sarcoidosis, than it was for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

"Preventing dementia is a public health priority, and previous studies have suggested that poor lung health, which is often preventable, may be linked to a greater risk of developing dementia," said Dr Lutsey.

"In this study, we looked at the long-term association between poor lung function and the risk of developing dementia, using high-quality measures," added the author.

The study found that compared to those without lung disease, the odds of dementia or mild cognitive impairment were:

- 58 percent higher among those with restrictive lung disease.

- 33 percent higher among those with obstructive lung disease.

The study also found that low results on two spirometry tests--forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC)--were associated with dementia. FEV1 is the amount of air a person can forcefully exhale in one second. FVC is a measurement of lung size.

According to the authors, possible explanations for these findings are that lung disease produced low blood oxygen levels, which in turn may have led to inflammation, stress and damage to the brain's blood vessels.

Study limitations included the fact that participants' lung function was assessed only at the beginning of the study and that many patients died before being assessed for dementia or cognitive impairment.

Because it was not a randomised, controlled trial, the study cannot prove a cause and effect relationship between lung disease and dementia or mild cognitive impairment.

If these associations are causal, the researchers wrote, this would give added weight to efforts to improve air quality and to help people quit smoking. These public health measures might also lower rates of dementia as well as decrease lung disease.

"Preventing lung disease is inherently important," Dr Lutsey said, adding that if other studies confirm their study's findings, "both individuals and policymakers will have an added incentive to make changes that protect lung health, as doing so may also prevent dementia.

Health experts for building awareness to prevent fistula

Health experts at a seminar have stressed on creating awareness among women to prevent esicovaginal fistula, a devastating injury in which an abnormal opening forms between a woman’s bladder and vagina, resulting in urinary incontinence.

“In Bangladesh, victims of child marriage and pregnant mothers from delivery-related complicacies mostly suffer from obstetric vesicovaginal fistula,” said Additional Director General (Health) of the Directorate of Health Services Professor Dr Nasima Sultana.

Dr Sultana made these observations at the inception seminar on the UNFPA- funded “Elimination of Genital Fistula by Capturing, Treating, Rehabilitating and Reintegrating in Bangladesh (FRRei) Project held here on Sunday as the  chief guest.

LAMB Hospital with assistant of the divisional health administration organised the day-long seminar at Begum Rokeya auditorium of RDRS Bangladesh in the city.

Rangpur Divisional Director (Health) Dr Amal Chandra Saha presided over the event participated by fistula experts from home and abroad, Civil Surgeons and physicians of the district level hospitals of all eight districts in Rangpur division.

Citing global survey reports, Dr Sultana said one million women are currently suffering from obstetric vesicovaginal fistula in the world where the number is increasing by 10,000 more every year.

“In Bangladesh, 70,000 women are suffering from fistula and the number is increasing by 2,000 annually,” she said adding that the condition is rare in developed countries.

“Though the disease is a complete curable one, but it is spreading, especially among women aged between 15 and 30 years, due to lack of awareness, knowledge, ignorance and timely treatment in Bangladesh as well as in development countries,” she added.

Dr Sultana stressed on creating social awareness to stop child marriage, ensure four-time checkups of pregnant women at health facilities and refrain from delivering babies through cesarean operations without necessity for preventing fistula.

Dr Amal Chandra Saha suggested for paying due attention to female patients suffering from obstetric vesicovaginal fistula and taking timely steps for ensuring their proper treatments for their complete recovery to lead normal life.

Bangladesh women are under-represented in all hourly wages: ILO

In its Global Wage Report 2018-19, the ILO says the ratio of representation of women to men in the country is around 1:3.
The condition is poorer in Jordan and Egypt while to a lesser extent in Mexico, Nepal, The Gambia, South Africa and the United Republic of Tanzania, according to the report published on Monday.
In fact, across the world, a “sizeable” proportion of women are left out of wage employment, it says.
In the case of high-income countries, reduced participation of women in wage employment may be the consequence of motherhood status, whereas in middle- or low-income countries not being in wage employment may also be an indicator of participation in own-account work in the informal economy, according to the report.
In all but five of the 73 countries in the ILO database, the incidence of part-time work is higher among women than among men, although the scale of the difference varies widely.
In the Netherlands, for example, 72 percent of women employees but only 26 percent of men employees are part-time workers.
By contrast, among Bangladeshi employees, only 10 percent of women and 4 percent of men work parttime.
On a weighted average of the 72 countries, the proportion of women in part-time work is 14 percent, compared to 7 percent for men.
WOMEN EARNING 20% LESS THAN MEN
The report finds global wage growth has been weak while the gender pay gap, at about 20 percent globally, remains unacceptably high. It means women are still earning 20 percent less than men do globally.
Bangladesh, however, has made remarkable progress in reducing gender pay gap. It is among a few countries where the pay gap is in favour of women.
Against a global average of 15.6 percent in men's favour, gender pay gap in Bangladesh is 5.5 percent in women's favour.

Can’t emulate my mother even if I wanted to: Janhvi Kapoor on Sridevi

Janhvi talks about personal growth following her mother Sridevi's demise and her Bollywood debut Dhadak

Janhvi Kapoor has had a tumultuous 2018 as the young star lost her mother Sridevi earlier this year and subsequently also had the release of her Bolly debut Dhadak alongside Shahid Kapoor's brother Ishaan Khattar.

Speaking at the 49th International Film Festival of India with her father Boney Kapoor by her side, Janhvi said, "It’s harder to say anything... When I say ‘growth’, I mean personal growth, I don’t know about artistic. This year brought me both the worst and the best experience of my life. It’s a little strange... Our family is now united, so that is very big thing for me."
She added that her growth has been "tremendous" on the personal front and has helped her come out stronger during trying times.
"But whatever happened that too was [a] very heavy [tragedy]. We are still in shock, so we haven’t been able to process it properly. I’m really thankful for all the love that we have received and I got a chance to work, which is a big thing for me. I got a chance to make my parents proud, which is most important for me."
Boney Kapoor when speaking of his late wife said, "Janhvi already has an idol in front of her. There is not one as complete as an actor as her."
To which Janhvi replied, "I can’t emulate her, even if I wanted to."
Steering away from her personal life, Janhvi touches upon feminism in films, especially during the "Golden Era" of Hindi cinema. Citing the example of Guru Dutt and Madhubala's film Mr and Mrs 55, the actor explains how the film celebrating feminism during its time.
“I think they are way ahead of even our time. I feel we have gotten tangled in a trap, a commercial one. I think the freedom to tell the story was much earlier,” she said.
"Madhubala has done such a beautiful job in the film. But more than that, the concept that the film raised. It dealt with feminism. Madhubala ji’s character was so forward thinking. Her aunt was also in the film, whose character was more (conservative about) how girls should behave in a society. They did not present it as an issue, they slipped it in beautifully in the story."
The 21-year-old continued, "Films coming out today which are about a girl, suddenly we tag them as ‘female-oriented’ films. They make it a big deal that it does not have a hero. There have been so many films Mother India, Chaalbaaz, Sita Aur Geeta, Sujata, Bandini, etc. The woman was the hero in all these films but they weren’t tagged as ‘female-oriented’."Dawn.
