Sterling rescues Man City, Rooney lifts Everton

Raheem Sterling scored a stunning 96th-minute winner as Manchester City dramatically edged Southampton 2-1 on Wednesday to preserve their eight-point lead at the Premier League summit.

Pep Guardiola's side looked set to drop points after Oriol Romeu cancelled out Kevin De Bruyne's opener, only for Sterling to Everton remain the last team to have avoided defeat against City, having drawn 1-1 at the Etihad Stadium in August, although Wolverhampton Wanderers took them to penalties in the League Cup.
City went ahead in the 47th minute against Southampton when Virgil van Dijk, under pressure from Nicolas Otamendi, diverted De Bruyne's free-kick into his own net, with the Belgian midfielder awarded the goal.
Romeu levelled with 15 minutes to play when Sofiane Boufal helped the ball into his path and the Southampton midfielder hammered a shot in off the crossbar.
But with time almost up, Sterling exchanged passes with De Bruyne and curled a glorious shot past Fraser Forster to send Guardiola into raptures on the touchline.
Third-place Chelsea belied the first-half dismissal of manager Antonio Conte for dissent to win 1-0 at home to Swansea City courtesy of a 55th-minute header by defender Antonio Rudiger.
"The problem is I was frustrated because the opponents were wasting time," explained Conte.
"But I have apologised because I did the wrong thing."
Mesut Ozil shone on his return to Arsenal's starting XI after illness as Arsene Wenger's men thrashed Huddersfield Town 5-0 to tighten their grip on fourth place.give City a 19th straight win in all competitions and a club-record 12th successive win in the league.
It was Sterling's third late winner in as many games and will have sickened second-place Manchester United, who had closed to within five points of the leaders by winning 4-2 at Watford on Tuesday.
"It was an astonishing end to the game. It means a lot," City manager Guardiola told the BBC.
"What happened in the locker room was amazing. We want to win the league, but you have to celebrate when you score in the last breath like that."
Elsewhere there were wins for Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and upwardly mobile Burnley, while Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick as Everton beat West Ham United 4-0 in front of Sam Allardyce, who is set to become their new manager.
Alexandre Lacazette set Arsenal on their way to a 12th straight home league win by finishing from Aaron Ramsey's flick in the third minute.
- Salah double -
Ozil put the game to bed in a dazzling four-minute spell mid-way through the second half, setting up goals for substitute Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez before finding the net himself. Giroud completed the scoring.
Liverpool leapfrogged Tottenham Hotspur into fifth place courtesy of a 3-0 victory at Stoke City.
Jurgen Klopp's side took the lead through Sadio Mane's neat dink in the 17th minute and substitute Mohamed Salah added a late brace, the first of which was a stunning volley, to take his goal tally for the campaign to 12.
Burnley also crept above Spurs after Robbie Brady made a goal for Chris Wood and scored one for himself in a 2-1 win at Bournemouth, who replied through Josh King.
Man of the day was the evergreen Rooney, who scored his first hat-trick in over six years to lead Everton to a morale-boosting win over third-bottom West Ham.
Allardyce was in the stands at Goodison Park after Everton announced he was finalising terms to succeed the sacked Ronald Koeman as manager.
David Moyes returned to Goodison as West Ham manager and had the misfortune to have a front-row seat for a sensational performance by the player whose career he launched.
With David Unsworth still in caretaker charge, Everton took an 18th-minute lead when Rooney headed in at the second attempt after his penalty was parried by Joe Hart.
Tom Davies teed up Rooney to sweep in a second and after Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had saved a spot-kick from Manuel Lanzini, Rooney completed his hat-trick with a stupendous goal.
After racing from his box, Hart fluffed his clearance and from 15 yards inside his own half, Rooney drilled an exquisite first-time finish back over the West Ham goalkeeper's head.
Ashley Williams added a late fourth to complete Everton's second win in 13 matches.
"Great hat-trick, great display from Wayne," said Unsworth, who revealed he had spoken to Allardyce before the game.
"I'm delighted for the club. I took over when we were in the bottom three and we've got out of it in the six weeks."

Mulan: Disney casts Chinese actress Liu Yifei in lead role

Disney has picked Chinese actor Liu Yifei to play Mulan in an upcoming film, following accusations against Hollywood of 'whitewashing'.

The live-action adaptation of the 1998 animated movie will tell the tale of the famed Chinese heroine Hua Mulan.

Several Hollywood films have faced criticism in recent months for featuring white actors in Asian roles.

Thousands took part in an online campaign calling for an Asian actress to be cast as Mulan.

Recent films accused of whitewashing include the Hollywood remake of Japanese anime Ghost in the Shell, which had Scarlett Johansson in the main role which was originally Japanese, and Chinese epic The Great Wall which starred Matt Damon as its lead character.

Liu, nicknamed "Fairy Sister" for her delicate looks and previous roles in fantasy dramas, is well-known as an actress, model and singer in China.

The 30-year-old is said to be fluent in English, having grown up partly in New York.
The Hollywood Reporter said she was picked out of nearly 1,000 candidates for the film.

Rare pink diamond falls short of world record price in Hong Kong auction

The 14.93-carat vivid pink diamond went for a final price of HK$249,850,000, which comes to $2.14 million per carat, to an international private collector at Christie's autumn sale.

The price fell short of breaking the previous world auction record for the most expensive pink diamond per carat, which was set in 2009 when a cushion-shaped fancy vivid pink diamond went under the hammer for $2.155 million per carat.
"The colour of the stone was at the very top end of the pink diamonds, for pink. The size was very important, almost 15 carat, so you have an important size, a top colour, absolutely clean stone and beautifully cut. So all of those elements together factored into the perfect masterpiece helped us achieve this price," said Rahul Kadakia, Christie's International Head of Jewelry.
The world record price paid per carat is $4.03 million for the Blue Moon of Josephine, a 12.03-carat, cushion-shaped fancy vivid blue diamond that Hong Kong tycoon Joseph Lau bought in a 2015 Sotheby's auction, according to the Guinness World Records. Lau named the $48.5 million diamond after his daughter.

Buffon wins Italy's best player award

Italy's veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has eased some of his World Cup heartache by winning the Serie A Best Player of the Year award.
"I'm happy and proud. I never thought I'd get this kind of trophy, and I'll hold on tight to it because I never won best youngster!" said the 39-year-old Juventus goalkeeper at Monday night's ceremony.
"The failure to participate in the World is the biggest disappointment in my career together with some (lost) Champions League finals."
Napoli's Maurizio Sarri was named the best coach in the Italian football awards, voted for by the players, for competing for the title with a smaller budget than Juventus.
Buffon quit international football last month as four-time champions Italy sensationally missed out on their first World Cup finals in 60 years after a playoff defeat to Sweden.
"Italy-Sweden was the biggest disappointment of my life," he told Sky Sports Italia.
"But we need to move on, the season must end in the best way and with Juventus there are so many goals to be achieved."
Buffon won a tenth Serie A title with Juventus and helped the Turin-based side reach the Champions League final for the second time in three years.
He also won a third Italian Cup with the Juve.
Despite the World Cup setback, he has left the door open on a future return for the national side.
"I've taken a period of rest, I'm getting on, I've always been a soldier signed up for the national side and Juventus, so I can't desert," he said.
"Even at the age of 60, if there was a dearth of goalkeepers I'd be available because that's how I conceive the idea of a nation."
It is the sixth straight year that a Juventus player has won the award with Buffon following in the footsteps of Andrea Pirlo (2012- 014), Carlos Tevez (2015) and Leonardo Bonucci (2016).
Buffon has said he will retire at the end of this season, unless Juventus win the Champions League title.
The Serie A champions play league leaders Napoli on Friday before a crunch Champions League game next week at Olympiakos when they need a win to guarantee passage into the next round.

Indian SC rejects bid to stop world release of Padmavati

India's top court Tuesday rejected a legal attempt to block the global release of a Bollywood film that has sparked violent protests, warning against pre-judging the controversial historical epic.

Caste-based groups have been staging violent demonstrations against "Padmavati" amid rumours that it will depict a romance between a Hindu queen and a Muslim ruler.
The epic was scheduled for release in India on December 1 but delayed indefinitely after the censor board refused to certify it.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a legal petition to delay its release abroad, saying nobody should pre-judge the censors before the film is classified.
"Responsible people in power and public office say certain things, and make comments on certain aspects, that violate the rule of law," declared the bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra.
"We are sure they will be guided by the basic premise under the rule of law and not venture outside."
A number of officials, including state leaders from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling party, had vowed to ban screenings of the film in their jurisdictions unless controversial sections were removed.
The leader of a caste-related group also offered 50 million rupees ($769,000) to anyone who "beheaded" lead actress Deepika Padukone or director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
In January protesters belonging to the Rajput Karni Sena caste-based group attacked Bhansali and vandalised the set during filming in Jaipur in Rajasthan.
Speculation that the film will include a romantic liaison between Rajput queen Padmavati, also known as Rani Padmini, and the 13th and 14th century Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji, had enraged activists from the historically Hindu warrior caste.
Rajput Karni Sena accuse the film's makers of distorting historical facts. But some historians say the queen is a mythical character and there is no clear evidence that she even existed.
Protesters attacked another set near Mumbai in March, burning costumes and other props.
Lawyer ML Sharma, who brought the petition before the Supreme Court, had previously failed to prevent the film's release in India.
Harish Salve, representing the film's director and producer, said there was no intention of releasing the film abroad until it had received classification at home.AFP.

Bangabandhu satellite launch deferred to March

The launch of Bangladesh’s first commercial satellite Bangabandhu-1 has been deferred and has been pushed down to an approximate schedule in March.

Construction of the satellite is complete, Shahjahan Mahmood, chairman for Bangladesh Telecom Regulatory Commission (BTRC) said today.
A precise date has not been set yet, but a launch is probable in March, he told during a meeting of Telecom Reporters’ Network at his office this afternoon.
The telecom regulatory body’s chief said he visited France and witnessed the complete satellite last week. It will be transported to the US for launch by March.
The sophisticated and highly technical government project at a cost of Tk 2,967 crore. The satellite's structure is being built by a French firm -- Thales Alenia Space.
Bangabandhu-1 is expected to provide services to all South Asian countries as well as Indonesia, the Philippines, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, if its frequency is properly coordinated, according to project documents.
Bangladesh currently meets its demand for satellite connectivity by renting bandwidth from foreign operators which costs the country about $14 million a year. Once launched, Bangabandhu-1 will save the foreign currency expenditure.
The lifespan of the satellite will be 15 years, which will allow the country to earn $1 billion by leasing out the transponders and another $1.5 billion by selling other services.
In November 2015, the BTRC signed a $248-million deal with Thales Alenia Space to manufacture and launch the country's first satellite.

FIFA will not tolerate racism at 2018 World Cup: Infantino

Several players, including Brazil and former Zenit St Petersburg forward Hulk, have voiced concerns that racism could mar the tournament, saying such incidents are a regular feature of domestic league games in the country.
Infantino said in a video statement that anti-discrimination was a "high priority" for FIFA, and that the organisation would deal with offences firmly.
"We'll make sure that no incidents will happen and... we have for the first time in a World Cup the so-called, three-step procedure where a referee can stop a game or even abandon a game if there are discriminatory or racist incidences," he added.
"We will be very, very firm on that so we can expect fair play in Russia."
Infantino, who was elected FIFA president in February of last year, also said technology would play a big role at the tournament, although a final decision on using video assistant referees (VARs) would only be taken next year.
VAR, which involves officials watching the action remotely and drawing the match referee's attention to officiating mistakes or missed serious incidents, is already in use in the top-flight leagues of Germany and Italy.
"I think it is absolutely normal that in 2018 we can explore and see how we can help the referee and the team to take the right decision," Infantino said.
"So video assistant refereeing is a topic which will be decided in March of next year but the experience so far has been extremely positive to help the referee not to commit big mistakes which obviously as a human being he can do."
Goal-line technology will be used during the World Cup, he added, having been used for the first time at the 2014 edition of the tournament in Brazil.
Russia is also caught up in a doping scandal, and Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko on Tuesday downplayed the issue of doping among its soccer players, saying reports on them using performance-enhancing drugs were an attempt to discredit the country.
Infantino said robust testing procedures would ensure a fair tournament.
"Obviously all players in all teams will be tested in competition and out of competition by WADA-accredited laboratories and... and fair play will reign in this respect," he said.

Smith defies England as Australia fight back

Skipper Steve Smith led a rescue mission to revive Australia's fortunes after a top-order batting collapse in the Ashes Test against England in Brisbane on Friday.
Home hopes rested on Smith to mount a fighting rearguard after the loss of four wickets in a faltering chase after England's first innings of 302 at the Gabba.
At the close on the second day, the Australians were 165 for four and trailing by 137 runs, with Smith unbeaten on 64 and Shaun Marsh not out 44.
It left the match intriguingly poised once again after England ended day one in a similar position before collapsing before lunch on Friday.
Smith was then thrust into another high pressure situation after Australia suffered a now-familiar malfunction at the top of the order. "He's number one batter in the world, he knows his game better than anyone else and he goes out there and sticks to a plan and a process and it works for him, so hats off to our captain," said Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.
England had done their homework, encircling Smith with fielders and trying to frustrate the fidgety Australian captain into playing a rash shot.
But Smith, Test cricket's top-rated batsman, stepped up to the challenge with a defiant knock off 148 balls.

Fizz back as Kings bat

Bangladesh pace sensation Mustafizur Rahman is back in action after more than five weeks on the sidelines. The left-arm pace bowler made it to the eleven of the Rajshahi Kings for their Bangladesh Premier League match against Comilla Victoriaans at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium today.
Rajshahi skipper Darren Sammy won the toss and elected to bat first, so Mustafizur's fans will have to wait a while yet to get to see the return of their hero.
Mustafizur had injured himself on October 14 in South Africa, a day before the start of the ODI series. He had badly twisted his left ankle and has been out of commission till he joined the Rajshahi outfit on November 8 and slowly worked himself back into fitness under the care of physio Bayzedul Islam Khan.
Including Rajshahi's practice at the MA Aziz Stadium yesterday, Mustafizur has bowled in five sessions and since Thursday has been bowling at full tilt. He has had no complaints, according to the Rajshahi physio.

Rani Mukherji on nepotism: When I got into films, my dad wasn’t a very successful producer or director

Actress Rani Mukerji, who is coming back to the big screen with Hichki after a long hiatus, says she doesn’t ask her husband and filmmaker Aditya Chopra to cast her in films. “I don’t talk about work with Aditya.
I don’t tell him to cast me in films, I can only tell him when do we make our next baby. My conversation with Adi is all about love and Adira. I can’t have a huge family as I think I have missed the bus. I should have started long time ago. But I can always try for a second child,” Rani said at the India Today Conclave East 2017 on Friday.

Rani, who has appeared in films like Black, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Mardaani and No One Killed Jessica, says she never wanted to be an actor in the first place. “My mum wanted me to be an actor, I actually agreed to her wish. My father was very against my mum’s wish. He was not very keen that I join films because he has been in the industry for so long. He thought that I wasn’t too strong to go through the perils of cinema”.

“I told my mum she should reconsider as I will make a fool of myself. But she wanted me to at least try. I did it and I realised that I wanted to do this. And then, there was no looking back,” said Rani, reports Ians.
On the issue of nepotism, the daughter of late filmmaker Ram Mukerji, said: “I wouldn’t say I had a soft landing. In the film industry, you get where you get because of your talent and merit. We have to sweat it out and work in all kinds of environment and wait for the audience to accept you or not accept you. You may be the brother, sister or daughter of a popular actor or director, and still not be accepted. When I got into films, my dad wasn’t a very successful producer or director. Nepotism debate is baseless. People have come from non-filmy background and made it big in Bollywood.”

On her next film Hichki, she said: “The two years’ break I took for my baby, I told my director I might not do it. I am too domesticated. He said if we work around the timing. I asked him I don’t know if I can act. When I went for the first day of the shoot for Hichki, I found it so easy. And (thought) I should never forget that this is who I am.”

Govt launches new maternal, child health project in 25 low-performing districts

The project launch came just days after a shocking revelation from a survey that more women in Bangladesh were dying from childbirths now than before.

Canada, UNICEF and UNFPA will support the health ministry for the “Improving Sexual, Reproductive Health and Rights including Maternal and Newborn Health in Low Performing Districts” project.
Adolescent pregnancy, neonatal mortality, unmet need in family planning, inadequate quality maternal and neonatal health services, remain as significant challenges in Bangladesh.
There has been a plateau in the reduction of maternal mortality, but at the same time, 62,000 newborns are dying every year in Bangladesh.
Another major concern is the prevailing and growing inequity and disparities across geographical areas and wealth quintiles regarding access to essential services resulting in excess morbidity and mortality.
“Canada is proud to support the government of Bangladesh in its efforts to improve health for mothers, children and newborns across the country,” Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister for International Development, Canada said at the launching on Thursday.
“This initiative will help to save over 15,500 lives and provide 1.75 million women and girls with greater knowledge and access to sexual and reproductive health and rights.”
The project will work on health systems strengthening, capacity development, community awareness raising, and empowering adolescents through education and will build on existing health, education, and community structures, within the government systems.
UNICEF is supporting the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to promote improved home and community based new-born care behaviour and practices in 25 low performing districts of Bangladesh, covering the most deprived population.
They have taken steps to upgrade facilities with the provision of Special Care New-born Units (SCANU) for sick new-born in 32 hospitals and Newborn Stabilizing unit in Upazila health complex.
During this new project, these facilities will be scaled up to the lowest performing five districts including Jamalpur, Moulvibazar, Sirajganj, Rangamati and Patuakhali.
“As a strategic partner, we reaffirm UNICEF’s continued commitment to support the government of Bangladesh in its efforts to reduce maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality and improve adolescent health and family planning to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs). The project is indeed a timely initiative towards this end”, said Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF Representative.
UNFPA is already supporting the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in creating a cadre of professional midwives to provide respectful, evidence-based care for women and newborn.
UNFPA is also working with the government to increase institutional capacity to deliver integrated and equitable sexual and reproductive health services, as well as increase access to a range of rights-based family planning options and information for those who want and need them.
“Better outcomes for mothers and newborns go hand in hand with strengthening the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls, also empowering young people through education now. This is why the holistic, integrated approach to the project is pivotal,” commented Iori Kato, UNFPA Bangladesh Acting Representative.
Both UNICEF and UNFPA will work on emergency obstetric and newborn care. Both organisations will focus on community awareness, the UNFPA said in a statement.
